About Probate Court

A gavel rests on its sounding block with a several law books and a justice scale out of focus in the background. A cool blue cast dominates the scene.

The Litchfield Hills Probate District #24 encompasses 12 towns in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut. Canaan, Cornwall, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Thomaston, Warren. While each of these towns has its own character and charm, they all have the same need, to have their Probate Court run by a Judge who is willing to put their community needs first. If elected, Kristen Mostowy will keep the three Probate Court locations previous established, Litchfield, Kent and North Canaan, so that community members can continue to have easier access to the services. She also understands the time commitment needed to cover a 12 town district and therefore, if elected, would be dedicating her time solely to the court, her family and the communities rather than trying to continue her private law practice as well.

Often times the Probate Court is referred to as “the People’s Court” because the Probate Court offers simpler and more direct access to certain types of legal proceedings. The Probate Court is a court of limited jurisdiction which means it does not hear every type of legal matter. Probate Court Judges deal with individuals during some of the most sensitive times in their lives.

Some of the types of cases the Probate Court handles are:

Estates, Wills & Trusts

Adoptions

Commitments

Guardianships

Conservatorship Appointments (financial and personal)

Name changes

The most important things the Probate Court can offer the community are compassion and a fair hearing. Kristen Mostowy’s professional and personal background have provided her with the tools necessary to serve the residents of the Litchfield Hills Probate District with the compassion and integrity they deserve.
